The Special Tony Award For Regional
Theatre
Beginning in 1976,
The American Theatre Wing
agreed to a request on behalf of The
American Theatre Critics
Association to consider the presentation of
a Special Tony Award
for Regional Theatre. Each year since then, The
Wing has accepted
the Association's recommendation of a company that
has displayed
a continuous level of artistic achievement contributing
to the
growth of theatre nationally.
The Special Tony Award For Outstanding Regional Theatre is presented during the annual telecast. The Tony Awards are exclusively run by the Wing and produced by the League, and any sponsorship queries should be to their attention.

ATCA/Steinberg New Play Award
Since shortly after its formation in 1974, the American Theatre Critics Association has annually cited outstanding new plays produced around the United States, outside of New York City (which already has extensive other theater awards). In the 90's, the nominating committee began accepting nominations for
musicals.
Since 2000, the author of the principal citation
receives a
cash award of $15,000. Authors of two additional citations
each
receive $5,000. These cash prizes are funded by the The Harold
and
Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust, and are now named The
American
Theatre Critics/Steinberg New Play Awards. The winner is
excerpted
and the citations reviewed in the definitive annual theater
yearbook, Best Plays.
Any play receiving its professional premiere,
outside of New York City, as a
finished work is eligible for nomination.
Several ATCA Award
selections have gone on to major off-Broadway
or Broadway
productions, and have received subsequent awards from
other
organizations. The winners are typically announced during
the annual Actors' Theatre of Louisville's annual Humana Festival
of New
American Plays.

The M. Elizabeth Osborn Award
The M. Elizabeth Osborn Award was established in 1993, named for Theatre Communications Group and American Theatre play editor M. Elizabeth Osborn. The award now carries a $1,000 cash award,

other major national awards.
The Osborn Award typically is presented at the ATCA winter conference during its Celebrity Luncheon in New York's Theatre District.

The Francesca Primus Prize Finds New Home with the American Theatre Critics Association
FRANCESCA PRIMUS AWARD APPLICATION
& INFORMATION
* Annual submissions are due in February *
The Francesca Primus Prize is an annual $10,000 award honoring outstanding contributions to the American theater by a female artist who has not yet achieved national prominence.
Administered by the American Theatre Critics Association (ATCA), the prize is made possible through the generosity of the Francesca Ronnie Primus Foundation, which honors the writer, critic, performer and dramaturg who died at 42 of lung cancer in 1992.
Historically the award has been given to an outstanding female playwright, but the committee now also considers other significant female theater artists, such as directors or artistic directors. The Primus Prize operates on an open submission basis--an applicant may submit herself or be nominated by another individual or organization. Members of ATCA are eligible to nominate or supply evaluative letters.
To qualify for consideration, a playwright must have had a fully staged, professional production of her script within the calendar year. For artists in other disciplines, there must also be some significant achievement in the calendar year. But in both cases, the committee will consider a body of work going back several years.
