ATCA offers valuable networking opportunities through twice yearly conferences. In a typical year, we gather for a long weekend in New York City as well as for a weeklong annual conference in a major theatre center outside New York. In addition to panels, workshops, seminars, guest speakers, and discussions with regional and national theater practitioners, there's ample opportunity to indulge in offerings at the region's theatres, talk shop with others in your profession, and socialize.
The membership year runs from June 1 to May 31 but you may join at any time. Those who join in the last six months of the membership year, January 1-May 31, will automatically receive an additional six months free. This does not apply to members who renew late. Introductory dues are $45 for the first year of membership and $55 for each successive year. Each applicant must be sponsored by a current member and must submit an application accompanied by eight recent reviews. Applicants who do not know an ATCA member should contact Kathryn Burger at the address below.
In addition to our bi-annual conferences and meetings, ATCA publishes Critics Quarterly, a quarterly magazine filled with discussions of current trends in theatre and the ethical dilemmas critics face, reviews, and information on upcoming seminars and workshops as well as news of job openings across the country.
ATCA also offers several educational and personal enrichment opportunities. Weekend seminars and study tours help critics sharpen their skills and widen their cultural horizons. Critics Quarterly also carries valuable information on educational grants and opportunities available to critics as well as guidance on how to apply for them.
Additionally, ATCA is an avid supporter of new plays. To that end, we give out annual awards for significant new plays and up-and-coming playwrights. Members also make recommendations to the American Theatre Wing for the Regional Theatre Tony Award¨ and vote on inductees to the Theater Hall of Fame.
